Fenrir

The Fenrir is MU's top mount: a wolf you ride, which gives combat bonuses and carries a status that is hard to ignore. It is also, by far, the most expensive thing to make on this server.

There are four mixes in a row, all in the Chaos Machine. Each one consumes the result of the previous one, and failing any of them consumes everything that was inside.

The four steps

1. Fragment of Horn

What goes in 1 Jewel of Chaos + 20 Splinter of Armor + 20 Bless of Guardian
Zen none
Chance 70% — VIP adds here

2. Broken Horn

What goes in 1 Jewel of Chaos + 10 Claw of Beast + 5 Fragment of Horn
Zen none
Chance 50% — VIP adds here

3. Horn of Fenrir

What goes in 1 Jewel of Chaos + 1 Broken Horn + 3 Jewel of Life
Zen 10,000
Chance 30% — the lowest in the game; VIP adds here

4. Upgrading the Fenrir

What goes in 1 Jewel of Chaos + 1 Horn of Fenrir + 5 Jewel of Life + 1 weapon OR 1 armour at +4 with an additional option
Zen 10,000
Chance worked out from the price of the item you add — cap of 80%, and today it comes out 0

Weapon or armour, never both — and the choice decides which Fenrir comes out:

  • Weapon → red Fenrir, the attack one.
  • Armour → blue Fenrir, the defence one.

The fourth step is stuck

Its chance is born from the price of the item you add, and the maths use that price on a scale that does not match the zen scale the server runs today. The result: for any item anyone would put into a mix like this, the maths round down and the screen shows 0%.

Check the number on screen before you click. While it reads 0, this mix only burns material. The first three steps work normally — it is worth building the horn and holding it.

The first two steps charge no zen at all. Failing them costs only material, which makes them the right place to get it wrong.

Where the material comes from

The three materials for steps 1 and 2 drop on one map only: Crywolf, from monsters level 97 to 134.

Material Chance per kill in Crywolf
Splinter of Armor 0.20%
Bless of Guardian 0.20%
Claw of Beast 0.20%

That is double the rate of an ordinary jewel, and it is the best material table on the server — but it is still 1 in 500 kills for each one.

What this really costs

The chances multiply, and that is where the chain gets frightening. To come out with one Horn of Fenrir, on average:

Material How much
Splinter of Armor ~950
Bless of Guardian ~950
Claw of Beast ~67
Jewel of Chaos ~58
Jewel of Life ~10
Zen ~33 thousand

In time: the three materials fall from the same kills, so that is roughly 475 thousand Crywolf monsters for a single horn.

"On average" means on average. Half the people spend less than that, and half spend more — some spend a lot more. There is no guarantee at any step, and having spent double the average does not make the next attempt any more likely. The machine has no memory.

The least bad way to do it

  1. Gather material before you start mixing. Getting to step 3 with no spare Broken Horn means stopping and going back to hunt.
  2. Get it wrong on the first two. They are free. That is where your luck should be spent, not on the third.
  3. If you are VIP, the bonus lands on the first three. It does not apply on the fourth.
  4. Save the weapon-or-armour decision for the end — and, for now, save the good item too: while the fourth step shows 0%, it would be lost for nothing.
